What am I doing wrong?

WTH??? Walked Jasper to the vet for a weigh in….. and he gained weight yet again…… could be muscle weight as his front leg is getting stronger but its discouraging when we are doing everything and he gets on the scale and to see he has gained weight. We go on walks twice a day, he is still on the metabolic diet and we measure his food to what he suppose to get, he is outside running around and he is not “sneaking” or getting extra food. The kids are not feeding him table scraps WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??? Before his accident he was a heafty 80+ pounds….. the vet wants him down to 65 -70 pounds… we got him down to 67 and today he is 72….

  1. Have they checked his Thyroid? I am in the same boat with my 12 year old quad paw. Cutting food, no treats. He was 82, went to 73, then back to 79. Ugh! They said to give a bit more time and if he continues to gain, they will check his Thyroid levels.

  2. I would suggest speaking with your vet about having Jasper’s thyroid checked. This can be done through blood work.

My Leland had issues with his weight as well. He was a beautiful Doberman…so a big boy. The vets kept saying how he needed to lose weight but I only fed him 3/4 of a cup of dry food with some grilled meat mixed in. He was a finicky eater so getting him to eat at times was like pulling teeth. His only real treat that he loved was peanut butter smeared in his Kong.

So prior to Leland’s surgery the surgeon ran a full panel of blood work and come to find out he had been dealing with hypothyroidism. Because his thyroid wasn’t functioning properly he put on weight. Our other vets kept saying Leland was too young to have a thyroid issue so they never checked it…we would have happily paid the expense if a vet had ordered it.

So the surgeon placed Leland on medication to get his thyroid functioning like it should prior to the surgery. I know some breeds are more prone to having hypothyroidism so it may be something for you to check into since Jasper seems to be gaining instead of losing. We have an 11 month old Dobie pup (Leland passed away last June) and to see the amount of food he eats compared to what I was giving Leland…I feel horrible.

Hope that helps in giving you another direction to look into.

  3. I second Sahana’s suggestion. Did the vet have any ideas and what steps should be taken to find out what’s causing it?

By the way, you’re doing everything RIGHT by being so dilligent about the weight loss.

  4. And I’ve found vet scales can really, really vary just by the dog moving just inches on the scales from the previous weigh in!

My goodness! To get him down to that weight that fast already? I sure wouldn’t be beating myself up over 2 lbs. But yeah, have the thyroid checked just in case.

GREAT JOB MOM AND KIDS TOO!!

    Hugs to Jasper!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

  5. A twitter follower had this suggestion: is Jasper eating grain free or a corn based food? Corn can really add a lot of extra pounds. Just a thought.
